PURPOSE:
1) To assist Central Transport Services with their patient discharges and/or item transport.
2) To provide a friendly companion while discharging patient.
DUTIES:
Escort patients; ambulatory, or by wheelchair or gurney (volunteers may not operate gurneys).
Follow volunteer transport guidelines.
Deliver supplies and equipment within the Medical Center.
PROCEDURE FOR DISCHARGING PATIENTS:
1) When discharging patients, check in at the nursing unit.
2) Use proper body mechanics when transporting. DO NOT LIFT PATIENTS, GET STAFF TO DO THIS. DO NOT TRANSPORT PATIENTS WEIGHING OVER 200 POUNDS.
3) Patients are to be accompanied at all times while being discharged. They are not to be left in the lobby unattended without supervisory approval.
RAMPS: Wheelchair patients are pushed up ramps facing front and are guided down ramps facing backwards. The Iolani 1 ramp must be avoided when transporting patients.
ELEVATORS: Wheelchair patients should be pulled into elevators so they face toward the elevator door while traveling in the elevator.
PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING DELIVERIES:
Follow Central Transport Services procedure. A volunteer is not to deliver lab specimens, controlled drugs, blood products, vents.
Volunteers are required to attend training/orientation from the Volunteer Office. Orientation within Central Transport Services is done by a CTS staff member. The area is also responsible for completing a Department Orientation Form to be placed in the volunteer’s file located in Volunteer Services. Regulation volunteer uniform and QMC name tag. Sign in/out through the Volunteer Services office.
