Cleaning Assistance for Native Bird Rehabilitation

Save Our Shearwaters
Description
We are currently in the busiest time of year for our native bird rehabilitation center, referred to as Fallout Season. Seabirds like the ‘a’o, ‘ua‘u kani, and ‘ua‘u are embarking on their maiden voyage to sea at night, guided by the moon’s illumination. When the moon is absent or but a sliver in the sky 🌒 they are more likely to become disoriented by other bright lights (e.g. lamp posts, porch lights), and fly towards those instead of the ocean. This disorientation continues until the birds end up on the ground (“fell out” of the sky... fallout!) unable to take flight again. Save Our Shearwaters admits 200-300 native birds during this time (September to December).
We are asking for a few extra hands to help us keep up with washing crates, netting, and other items as we handle this large influx in patients. Training will be provided and all washing occurs under a covered area. This is an amazing way to support native bird conservation on island, though the work isn't glamorous.
