Every volunteer helps create a safe, welcoming, and memorable experience for more than 500 runners, walkers, families, and supporters.

Whether you're greeting participants, cheering at a water station, supporting the Sophia Collection, helping at Pet Oasis, or celebrating finishers, you'll be making a real difference in our community.

No experience is necessary—we'll provide everything you need before your volunteer shift begins.

Shift 1: 🏁Finish Line & Cleanup Team

Time: 8:45 AM - 10:00 AM

Role Description:

Help bring the 24th Annual Freedom Run to a successful close! Volunteers will congratulate finishers, assist with the final breakdown of tents, tables, banners, signs, and event supplies, and help return the venue to the way we found it. Your help ensures the Freedom Run ends as successfully as it began. Volunteers are welcome to participate in the event before their shift begins. For insurance purposes, everyone—including volunteers participating in the 5K, 10K, or complimentary 1-Mile Awareness Walk—must register before participating. Planning to participate? Requirements:

Comfortable walking and light lifting (up to 20 lbs.). Able to help move tables, tents, and event supplies. Please arrive by 8:45 AM and check in with the event coordinator.

Shift 2: 🏅Awards Team

Time: 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM

Role Description:

Help celebrate our participants' accomplishments! Volunteers will assist with setting up the awards area, organizing medals and award certificates, welcoming award recipients, and helping the awards presentation run smoothly. This team plays an important role in recognizing the achievements of runners while creating a memorable finish-line experience for participants and their families. Help make every award recipient feel celebrated and appreciated as we recognize their accomplishments together. 🏅💜

Requirements:

Comfortable standing and moving around the awards area. Friendly, organized, and able to assist participants as needed. Please arrive by 7:30 AM and check in with the event coordinator.

Shift 3: 💧Water Station Cheer Team

Time: 6:30 AM - 8:45 AM

Role Description:

Help keep our runners and walkers hydrated and encouraged! Volunteers will fill paper cups with water, hand them to participants along the course, cheer everyone on, and help keep the water station clean and organized. Volunteers will be assigned to one of three water stations along the race course. Your enthusiasm and encouragement can make a big difference to participants of all ages and abilities! Bring your energy—your cheers may be just what someone needs to reach the finish line! 🎉

Requirements:

Comfortable standing outdoors for the duration of the shift. Able to lift and carry cases of water and supplies as needed. Please arrive by 6:30 AM and check in with the event coordinator.

Shift 4: 🐶 Pet Oasis Team

Time: 6:00 AM - 8:45 AM

Role Description:

Welcome visitors to the Pet Oasis, a fun stop for participants and their four-legged friends! Volunteers will assist with pet bandana sales, answer questions, help keep the area organized, and welcome guests visiting Toco, our epilepsy service dog. Toco and his human, Sabina, will be at the Neurelis Pet Oasis sharing how a service dog can make a meaningful difference in the life of someone living with epilepsy. If you'd like to participate in the event, you're welcome to complete the 1-Mile Awareness Walk during a quieter time, but please return to the Pet Oasis before runners begin finishing the race. Requirements:

Friendly and comfortable interacting with people and dogs. Comfortable using the Zeffy payment app for pet bandana purchases (training provided). Please arrive by 6:00 AM and check in with the event coordinator.

Role Description:

Welcome supporters visiting the Sophia Collection booth. Volunteers will distribute pre-ordered bags and pouches, assist guests interested in purchasing available items, answer questions, and help keep the display organized throughout the morning. Every purchase supports the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaiʻi while celebrating resilience, hope, and epilepsy awareness through the limited-edition Sophia Collection. Role Description:

Welcome participants joining the complimentary 1-Mile Awareness Walk, assist with bib pickup, answer questions, and help create a fun and welcoming race-day experience. Walk participants receive a complimentary race bib. Volunteers will also assist walkers who wish to purchase an official Freedom Run event shirt using our simple Zeffy payment app (cash and online payments accepted). Volunteers are welcome to participate in the event after their shift ends. Volunteers under 18 are welcome; younger children should be accompanied by an adult.
