Maui Disaster Assessment And Distribution Of Emergency Supplies Volunteer

Volunteers are needed to support Distribution of Emergency Supplies (DES) and Damage Assessment (DA) activities. DES responsibilities include inventorying, packaging, loading, and distributing relief supplies throughout affected communities. DA responsibilities involve walking through impacted areas to collect and document information on damage to residential structures, helping to provide a comprehensive picture of community impact. For both roles, volunteers will be contacted prior to their shift with directions and additional details; please do not report to any location unless instructed. Distribution of Emergency Supplies Volunteer Requirements

• Ability to sit/walk for long periods

• Ability to lift 30-50 lbs.

• Must bring identification

• Must wear closed-toed shoes

• Must dress appropriately for conditions

We want to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of the workforce and clients and avoid contributing to the further spread of any illness. Therefore, in order to sign up for this shift, all volunteers must agree to the following statements: 

• I do not currently have a cough, fever, headache, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, sudden loss of taste or smell, flu-like symptoms, a blister type rash or any other symptoms of illness. 

• Within the past 3 days, I nor anyone in my household have been in close contact with anyone with symptoms of illness.

• I understand that masking is currently optional in all work settings. Should there be a high percentage of the workforce infected with infectious illnesses on a DRO, the Vice President of Operations and Logistics may issue an order requiring additional illness mitigation, including requiring all responders on that DRO to wear a mask at all times.

• If I come in contact with someone who is presumed or confirmed to have an infectious illness, I may be required to mask and may be asked to submit for an illness test (such as COVID or influenza).

• If I become ill while deployed and test positive for an infectious illness, I may be required to isolate and/or may be asked to mask for up to 10 days.

• If I experience symptoms of any illness while deployed, I must promptly report these symptoms to Staff Health.

• I agree to abide by Staff Health’s recommendations for safeguarding our workforce and clients.

• I understand that if I experience symptoms of any illness within 48 hours of completing a shift, I will notify my supervisor and/or Staff Health on the operation.

Damage Assessment (DA) Volunteer Requirements

Red Cross Damage Assessment (DA) is how we check homes and neighborhoods after a disaster to figure out:

• What was damaged

• How badly it was damaged

• Which families need help right away

When it’s safe, DA team members go into affected communities and look at specific addresses to see whether the damage meets Red Cross criteria for immediate assistance. This is one of the first steps after a tornado, flood, or similar disaster.

DA helps ensure the Red Cross can provide support quickly and fairly, based on real, documented impacts.

FEMA and other partners also use this kind of information to understand the overall scale of damage and coordinate resources across agencies.
