We are currently accepting volunteers for an upcoming conservation trip to Halehaha.
Volunteers will assist with controlling invasive species in one of Kauaʻi's most remote and ecologically significant areas. This is a 4-day, 3-night backcountry trip, with camping on the Alakaʻi Plateau.
The work is meaningful and rewarding, but also physically demanding. Participants should be prepared for rugged terrain, dense vegetation, muddy trails, off-trail hiking, long hiking days, and extended work periods in remote locations. Volunteer participation is subject to approval to ensure individuals are physically prepared for the trip. This opportunity is not for everyone and is best suited for individuals with prior hiking, camping, or backcountry experience.
Some projects may require helicopter access, in which case volunteers must complete a free online Aviation Safety Certification course before the trip. Depending on the location, access may instead be by foot.
Weed control activities may include working with or applying herbicides under staff supervision. We also use field tools such as machetes, so experience with outdoor work and safe tool use are highly recommended. A commitment to safety is essential, as volunteer and staff safety is our highest priority.
Meals will be provided, along with some camping and field gear (subject to availability). Volunteers are responsible for personal gear, including sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, and appropriate field clothing.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute directly to conservation efforts, work alongside professionals, and experience places few people ever get to visit.
If you're looking for a meaningful adventure and are ready for a rewarding challenge, we'd love to hear from you.
More information and waivers will be provided to selected volunteers.
No waivers available.
