Understory Alliance is an education and conservation nonprofit that grows Māla Lāʻau, community forest gardens, in public spaces. We take our name from the understory, the layer beneath the forest canopy, where we live.
Each Māla Lāʻau is planted in layers the way a forest builds itself, with native, canoe, food, and medicinal plants growing together in parks, school grounds, and shared community spaces. Come to a workday. Gather food. Bring your ʻohana, meet up with friends. Take a moment alone. If you think a forest garden belongs in your community, we would love to hear from you. We are working toward a forest garden in every community that wants one.
We teach workshops, partner with organizations, and keep finding new places to plant. Bringing the forest to the people, one Māla Lāʻau at a time.
